DIY Marshmallow Fun Projects

We are having fun with "hot cocoa" month and you can't talk about hot cocoa without some discussion on marshmallows too! Here are three fun projects you can make with the pillow-y white sugary confections just in time for Valentine's Day or anytime you want to indulge in the tasty treat!

Marshmallow Fun Project #1 - Sparkly Heart Marshmallow Pops:

With a few supplies these are a super quick and easy treat to make and oh so cute!

Supplies needed:
Kraft Jet Puffed Stacker Marshmallows
Light blue polka dot cake pop sticks
Red sanding sugar
Wilton Cookie Icing

Instructions: Line a cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Insert your pop stick into the bottom of the marshmallow. Heat the cookie icing per the instructions on the label. You will not need a lot for this project or want the icing too hot. It should be warm enough to be able to draw your heart or another shape of your choice on the top of the marshmallow. I used the tip that comes on the icing bottle to draw a heart shape and a toothpick to fix the outline of the heart when needed. The icing doesn't need to be thick, just enough to make the shape and give the sugar something to stick to. Once the heart is on the marshmallow sprinkle with red sanding sugar and set on the cookie sheet to dry.

Marshmallow Fun Project #2 - Chocolate Dipped Peppermint Sticks

Supplies needed:
Peppermint sticks
Chocolate of choice to melt and dip
Mini chocolate chips
Tiny Marshmallows

Instructions: Line a cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Melt the chocolate of your choice in the microwave per package instructions. We used Ghirardelli and melted it in a small juice glass to make it easier to dip the peppermint sticks. Dip the stick in the chocolate, then top with tiny marshmallows and mini chips. Place them on the cookie sheet to set up. Once set these will make the perfect hot cocoa stir stick or you can package them with other fun items like some Marshmallow Hot Cocoa lip balm in small glassine bags to give out as gifts or party favors!

Marshmallow Fun Project #3 - Silver Metallic Tiny Marshmallows

Supplies needed:
Metallic silver airbrush liquid food coloring
Silver luster dust - coming to our shop soon!
Jumbo red heart sprinkles
Tiny Marshmallows

Instructions: We put the tiny marshmallows in a single layer on a cookie sheet to let them dry out and become a bit hard, like the marshmallows that come in hot cocoa packets. The reason for this is to help prevent the marshmallows from disintegrating since the dye we used was liquid. Once the marshmallows are no longer soft place in a quart size zip lock bag and add about a teaspoon of dye (can add more if needed). Shake the sealed bag to coat the marshmallows. Once fully coated add a little bit of a silver luster dust to give them a even more shimmer. Place on a wax or parchment paper lined cookie sheet to dry. Now you can decorate rice crispy pops as you see here.

Follow the recipe for our hot cocoa rice crispies in the link above but instead of cutting them into rectangles use a round deep cookie or biscuit cutter. Melt some chocolate in the microwave per package instructions. Using the back of a spoon spread some of the melted chocolate on half of the edge of pop. Insert a thin wooden treat stick into where you just spread the chocolate to help keep it in place. Sprinkle on an assortment of toppings such as tiny marshmallows, metallic marshmallows and mini chocolate chips. Add more chocolate to the other half of the edge so you can finish decorating your pop. A jumbo red heart sprinkle in the middle will complete the pop and you have a Valentine's Day treat that is perfect for boys!

We hope you enjoy our fun Marshmallow projects and give some a try! Stay tuned next week since we have a BIG event coming! There will be a fun styled hot cocoa party display to share and a HUGE giveaway! We've partnered with 15 other wonderful businesses to bring you some hot cocoa fun!
