Edible Skeleton Cupcake Toppers

Would you like to learn how to make our edible skeleton cupcake toppers?! These skeleton Halloween marshmallow pops are perfect to top your Halloween cupcakes. Plus who doesn't like 2 treats at once? A cupcake with a topper you can eat, no one could resist that! Create a fun Halloween cupcake display with them for a Doomsday Halloween party dessert table or have kids make them at a Halloween cupcake decorating party. Either way they are bound to bring some freakishly fun smiles, there's no bones about it!

Edible Skeleton Cupcake Toppers Supply List:

regular sized marshmallows
mini sized marshmallows
pretzel cookies or small thin pretzel twists
white cookie icing
shimmer white sanding sugar
shimmer light purple sanding sugar
6" silver lollipop sticks
black food pen

Step 1: Each topper you make takes 3 cookie pretzels to make the "bones" of the skeleton. Lay out on a baking sheet the number of pretzels you need for the number of toppers you are making. We choose to use pretzel cookies since the tops are flat and would hold the icing. Pretzel twists should work fine too if you can not find cookie pretzels.

Step 2: Place some of the white cookie icing in a clear disposable piping bag and snip just a little of the tip off. We found we could control the icing a little easier once in the piping bag versus decorating with it in the pouch it comes with. If you want to decorate right out of the icing pouch it comes in only cut off a small amount of the nozzle so you don't have too much icing come out while piping. Icing and decorating one cookie at a time, pipe the icing on the top of a pretzel and sprinkle on one of the colors of shimmer sanding sugar. You could use one color if you want but we decided 2 colors for our skeleton bones might look fun! Place back on the baking sheet and continue decorating until they are all done. Allow the icing to set up and dry for about 30-45 minutes before trying to assemble your edible skeleton cupcake toppers.

Step 3: While your cookie pretzels are setting draw the faces on your full size marshmallows with an edible food pen. If you don't have a food pen you could use melted chocolate in a piping bag to pipe on a face. Make them as fun, scary or goofy as you want! Take one of the 6" lollipop sticks and push it into the bottom of the marshmallow but do not push too hard that it pokes through the top of the marshmallow. Insert the lollipop stick with the marshmallow head in the bottom small space of the pretzel. push one pretzel almost up to the top, about .5" blow the marshmallow head. Take a mini marshmallow and push it onto the bottom of the lollipop stick and continue pushing it up the stick until it is about an inch from the marshmallow head. There needs to be a little space so the cookie pretzel will rest on the mini marshmallow at a slight angle. Move the pretzel to the right spot as shown in the photos and add a drop of the cookie icing where the pretzel touches the mini marshmallow. This will help the pretzel not spin on the lollipop stick. Repeat this step 2 more times until you have 3 pretzels on the stick and end with a mini marshmallow. You should have a couple inches of the lollipop stick left plain so it can be placed into the top of a cupcake.

Tip: We found the regular sized marshmallow was sticky enough to hold the lollipop stick in place but if you find that is not the case with your you can pull out the stick and add a drop or two of the cookie icing into the hole in the marshmallow and reinsert the stick.

Who knew a skeleton cupcake topper could be this fun AND be edible! These are sure to be a show stopper on your Halloween party dessert table.
