How to Make Edible Christmas Cookie Gift Tags:

Step 1. Make your favorite sugar cookie recipe that works well for cut out cookie. Select seasonal cookie cutters to use that go with the theme of your holiday decor, your gift wrap or goes with the present you are gifting. Roll the the cookie dough to a thickness of about .25" or a tad thicker. You need the cookies to be sturdy enough to turn into cookie gift tags.

Step 2. Cut your cookies out and place them on a lined baking sheet. Use the end of a paper straw and punch a hole in the top of the cookie leaving enough space around the hole so it doesn't break after it is baked. The hole needs to be big enough to allow room to string through bakers twine or ribbon after you decorate them.

Step 3. Bake your sugar cookies until they are light to golden brown on the bottom. Make sure you bake them long enough so they are crisp and sturdy versus a soft sugar cookie.

Step 1. Place your baked cookies on a piece of parchment paper. Use store bought cookie icing to help make decorating fast and easy! Our favorite is Betty Crocker Cookie Icing (not sponsored, just what we like). If you have a favorite icing recipe or prefer royal icing feel free to use that. For the decorating part of our project we will share how we decorated ornament shaped sugar cookies with just 3 items, 4 items if you decide to personalize them!

Step 2. The ornament sugar cookies are decorated in a couple steps. Place the cookie you are decorating on a small piece of parchment. Pipe three lines of icing as shown above in the top part of the ornament that has the hole. Add some gold edible glitter. Allow that to set up for a few minutes. While that part is setting up you can pipe and fill the bulb part of the ornament with the white cookie icing. Use a cookie scribe to pop any air bubbles in the icing. Sprinkle some white edible over where you iced to add a pretty sparkle effect on half of the bulb. By this time you should be able to pipe the last 2 lines of icing up at the end of the ornament  and sprinkle with gold glitter. The reason you only pipe some of the lines when you start decorating is to create the look of ridges on the end of the ornament. If you piped them all at once the icing would flow into each each other.

Step 3. Once all the icing and glitter has been applied allow the cookies to dry overnight. Thread bakers twine or ribbon through the hole and tie a knot to secure it.  If you want to personalize your cookie gift tags you can now paint on a name with edible art paint once the icing has fully set. Allow the paint to fully dry, can take a couple hours or overnight depending on the color you use. Once they are fully dry you can add the edible Christmas gift tags to all of your Christmas gifts!

The cookie gift tags would also be lovely hung on a Christmas tree! You could match the colors of the icing and glitter to your color scheme. There are a variety of ways you can embellish them. We had so much fun with these we decorated some other shapes of Christmas cookies that we'll share with you next week!
